Cross of Lendalfoot - Pendant

In Celtic times the Scottish Lendalfoot was very well-known, because the fairy island Ailsa Craig is lying next to it. This isle represented a gate to the Other World and one could also ferry across to the Arran islands, where in later times the Scottish folk hero Robert the Bruce took refuge. The knot pattern of this cross originates from that region and combines in a really beautiful way the Christian belief in God's reign with the Celtic belief in the eternal cycle of life from birth to death to rebirth. This cross was worn to find confidence and courage and to face up successfully the challenges of life.
 
This pendant is made of pewter, a shiny, soft metal which is very malleable and has a good tarnish resistance. Artists and craftsmen used pewter quite early (dinnerware, sculptures, household articles, pewter figures, jewelry) and hence pewter jewelry has a long tradition. The word pewter is probably a variation of the word spelter, a colloquial name for the same metal.
